Why Does Screw-Cap Removal Torque Change During Storage?

Screw-cap removal torque can change after application as the bottle, closure, liner and storage conditions interact. A lower or higher later reading does not, by itself, prove that the capper setting was wrong. Compare unopened packs made under the same documented conditions, and assess opening behaviour alongside closure integrity.

Separate the closing setting from the later opening result.

Application torque is the closing input; removal torque is the opening resistance measured at a defined later point. A machine setting, an immediate opening check and a conditioned-pack result are different records. Do not label them all simply “torque”.

Torque retention is an assessment of how opening resistance behaves with time under stated conditions. It is not proof of shelf life, leak resistance, child resistance or tamper evidence. Those require their own applicable package checks. This guide is a planning framework, not a laboratory protocol or a published result for a particular Lancing model.

Practical sequence

How should a retained-sample study be organised?

  1. Define the decision first. State whether the study investigates a complaint, checks a changed component, compares settings or supports a new package. The package owner should approve the acceptance criteria and conditioning schedule.
  2. Allocate separate unopened packs. Assign identified packs to each planned opening point. First opening changes the package history, so opening and reclosing one bottle repeatedly is not equivalent to testing separate retained bottles.
  3. Keep the original state intact. Do not hand-check, loosen or re-tighten a retained sample before its scheduled measurement. Put handling exceptions in the record and keep those packs separate.
  4. Measure the defined opening event. State whether the result represents initial movement, a tamper-band event or another agreed feature. Retain observations such as cap slip, bottle movement or a damaged bridge.
  5. Evaluate the pack, not only its average. Review individual results, component lots, visible seating, approved leakage checks and opening usability. A mean value can hide mixed good and damaged packs.

Compare the conditioning and test method with the approved package evidence. Do not automatically increase the closing setting to make a later opening number resemble an immediate result.

A small group of unusual results

Trace each result back to the bottle, cap, liner, production time and test event. Mixed lots, sample handling or a specific head may deserve a separate investigation.

Good torque but failed integrity checks

Do not release the pack solely because torque falls inside a limit. Investigate seating, liner condition and the failed package requirement before accepting the batch.

Is there one correct delay before testing removal torque?

No universal delay can be assigned to all screw closures. Use the package supplier’s approved method and the actual study objective. Record both application and opening times so immediate, conditioned and complaint samples remain distinguishable.

What percentage of application torque should remain?

There is no universal retention percentage that proves every bottle-and-cap combination is acceptable. Any percentage calculation needs a defined reference, compatible units and a package-specific acceptance basis. Compare approved evidence rather than importing an unrelated cap-size rule.

Can the same bottle be opened at each test interval?

Not for a comparison of first-opening torque on unopened retained packs. Opening and reclosing creates a different history. A repeated-use study may be useful, but it should be separately designed and named.

Does torque retention prove the pack will not leak in transport?

No. Torque retention measures a particular mechanical response. Transport, leakage, seal integrity and user-opening requirements must be assessed using the appropriate package methods and conditions, alongside rather than in place of the torque results.
