Torque retention
Screw-cap removal torque can change after application as the bottle, closure, liner and storage conditions interact. A lower or higher later reading does not, by itself, prove that the capper setting was wrong. Compare unopened packs made under the same documented conditions, and assess opening behaviour alongside closure integrity.
Define the evidence
Application torque is the closing input; removal torque is the opening resistance measured at a defined later point. A machine setting, an immediate opening check and a conditioned-pack result are different records. Do not label them all simply “torque”.
Torque retention is an assessment of how opening resistance behaves with time under stated conditions. It is not proof of shelf life, leak resistance, child resistance or tamper evidence. Those require their own applicable package checks. This guide is a planning framework, not a laboratory protocol or a published result for a particular Lancing model.

Trace each result back to the bottle, cap, liner, production time and test event. Mixed lots, sample handling or a specific head may deserve a separate investigation.
Do not release the pack solely because torque falls inside a limit. Investigate seating, liner condition and the failed package requirement before accepting the batch.
Buyer questions
No universal delay can be assigned to all screw closures. Use the package supplier’s approved method and the actual study objective. Record both application and opening times so immediate, conditioned and complaint samples remain distinguishable.
There is no universal retention percentage that proves every bottle-and-cap combination is acceptable. Any percentage calculation needs a defined reference, compatible units and a package-specific acceptance basis. Compare approved evidence rather than importing an unrelated cap-size rule.
Not for a comparison of first-opening torque on unopened retained packs. Opening and reclosing creates a different history. A repeated-use study may be useful, but it should be separately designed and named.
