Does CE or UKCA marking remove the user’s PUWER duties?

No. Product conformity information is relevant when machinery is supplied, but the employer or person controlling work equipment still has duties for suitability, installation, safe use, maintenance, inspection, information and training in the actual workplace.

Can an emergency stop replace a guard?

No. An emergency stop is a supplementary measure for an emergency; it does not prevent routine access to a dangerous part. The risk assessment should first determine how access is prevented or controlled during normal operation and foreseeable intervention.

Who owns emergency-stop integration on a capping line?

The project should identify one responsible party for the complete line safety function and define the boundaries between the capper, conveyors, feeder, filler, labeller and reject equipment. The effect of each stop and restart must then be tested at site acceptance.

How should cap or bottle jams be cleared safely?

Use a task-specific safe system based on the site risk assessment and machine instructions. The method may require stopping, isolation and dissipation of stored energy before access. Bypassing a guard or reaching into moving equipment to save time is not an acceptable recovery method.

What machinery safety records should be kept?

Retain the risk assessment, training and authorisation records, inspections required by the assessment, maintenance history, safety-function tests, modification records and any defects or corrective actions. The exact record set depends on the equipment and site system.
