How Do Clutch, Servo and Spindle Cappers Control Torque?

Screw-capper torque control can rely on a torque-limiting clutch, a controlled motor-driven head or frictional contact from belts or spindle wheels. The control method is not the same as a verified opening-torque result. Compare how torque is applied, what is actually measured, and how the completed bottle-and-cap combination is accepted.

What does “torque controlled” mean in a quotation?

The phrase needs a defined scope. It might describe an adjustable mechanical limit, a programmed drive command, a measured capping event or an independent check on removed samples. These provide different evidence. Ask the supplier to name the control component, measurement location and acceptance method.

The comparison below describes general technology families, not a declaration that each Lancing model includes a particular clutch, sensor or servo system. Published model data and an agreed configuration take precedence. Do not infer an exact torque range, monitoring function or accuracy from the word “automatic”.

Evidence chain

A setpoint, a monitor and a pack test are different.

Setpoint

The value or adjustment requested of the control system. It describes the intended operation, not proof that a particular closure was correctly threaded and sealed.

Process monitor

A signal recorded during capping, where that function is supplied. Ask what physical quantity is represented and how the signal is connected to the individual bottle.

Finished-pack test

A defined check after application, such as removal torque, cap height or a product-appropriate integrity test. It evaluates the package under stated conditions rather than simply repeating the control setting.

Machine acceptance

What should the sample trial demonstrate?

  1. Cap engagement before final resistance. Show that the cap enters the intended thread and seats at the approved height. A high resistance caused by a poor start is not a successful application.
  2. The real grip and support arrangement. Use the intended chuck insert, head or spindle contact along with the actual bottle-restraint method. Identify smooth, decorated or flexible components that may behave differently.
  3. Settings at the intended operating condition. Record settings, pack identity and the stated run conditions. Compare the initial state, a representative run and a controlled restart instead of relying on a single hand-fed cycle.
  4. Fault response and traceability. Where monitoring is specified, challenge what happens to a non-conforming pack and to its record. A screen display is not a reject-confirmation system.
  5. Independent package evidence. Use the approved torque method and integrity checks on identified samples. Keep application settings distinct from immediate and conditioned opening results.

Buyer questions

Questions about torque control in capping machines

Is a servo capper always better than a clutch capper?

No. Suitability depends on closure behaviour, required process control, changeovers, records, support and the demonstrated package result. More configurable motion or data can be useful, but does not remove the need for correct tooling, bottle control and sample acceptance.

Is an air-pressure setting the same as cap torque?

No. Pressure is an input to a pneumatic mechanism, not a universal measurement of torque at the closure. Use the actual machine’s control method and verify the resulting package with the agreed test procedure.

Does logged motor torque prove every bottle is leak-free?

No. A logged signal needs a defined measurement basis and bottle association. Leakage and closure integrity involve the bottle, thread, liner, application and product conditions, so relevant finished-pack checks remain necessary.

Can I obtain the correct torque range from cap diameter alone?

Cap diameter can help scope tooling, but it cannot establish an approved operating window for every closure. Use the closure supplier’s guidance, neck finish, liner, product conditions and actual test evidence before approving the setting.
